The Café Reunion: A Short Love Story of Rediscovered Friendship
It was one of those common days, the sort where the air feels excessively still, and nothing especially important appears to be going to occur. Maya had been sitting in the corner stall of the bistro, nursing her tepid espresso while attempting to extract words from the article she was composing. She had quite recently changed to her subsequent draft, when the entryway ringed open.
The barista welcomed the newbie with a cordial wave, however Maya scarcely took note. She had been too occupied by the blazing cursor on her screen. She hadn’t seen it right away, only the haze of movement and afterward — she froze. The unquestionable sound of a natural voice.
“Maya?” The voice called once more, this time gentler, more conditional.
Her head gobbled up. Her heart halted, then, at that point, thump excessively quick. Remaining by the counter, delaying like she didn’t know whether Maya would try and perceive her, was Erin — her life as a youngster dearest companion. The young lady she had enjoyed each late spring with, the one she’d moved away from when the two of them headed out to various schools, just to let the years and distance gobble up any attempts at reconnecting.
Maya’s mouth went dry. It was her. She appeared to be identical, but… not the equivalent. Erin had forever been a touch more cleaned, consistently in vogue, yet there was something about her demeanor now — like a blend of shock and skepticism — that caused Maya to feel like she was seeing a phantom.
“Erin?” Maya said, her voice shaking regardless of her maximum effort to sound easygoing. She stood up, the seat scratching boisterously against the floor. She was unable to prevent herself from grinning, however the grin felt practically unfamiliar, as though it had a place with another person.
“No doubt… it’s me,” Erin said with an apprehensive snicker, venturing toward the table. “I didn’t realize you were in the city. That is to say, I didn’t realize you even lived here.”
Maya couldn’t trust the happenstance. The city had a populace of more than 2,000,000 individuals, but, they were right here, in the equivalent bistro, on similar morning, following quite a while of no contact.
“I didn’t either,” Maya said, her words getting in her throat. “I didn’t realize you were here. After graduation, we both sort of… indeed, we floated, didn’t we?”
Erin gestured, the expression all over relaxing. “However, i pondered you. Occasionally. I was thinking about what has been going on with you.”
Maya could feel an irregularity structure in her throat. She had pondered Erin as well — on many times throughout the long term. However, they had both continued on. Or on the other hand so she’d told herself. The distance had turned into a propensity. What’s more, presently, it seemed like something to be broken. A wall that had remained between them for a really long time.
“Do you… need to plunk down?” Maya signaled to the seat opposite her, her hands marginally shaking as she got her espresso, the glow soothing.
“I’d very much want to,” Erin said, a speculative grin crawling onto her face. She plunked down, her eyes shining with something Maya couldn’t exactly put.
The quiet between them was agreeable in a manner that shouldn’t have been. Two individuals who had once been indistinguishable, then outsiders for a really long time — yet they were right here, as though no time had elapsed.
“So,” Maya started, after a beat, “how has life been? Truly?”
Erin’s look relaxed. “Truly? Not what I anticipated. Be that as it may, I think… I believe I’m at last sorting it out. And you?”
Maya grinned, feeling the pressure ease from her shoulders. “Exactly. Life’s significantly more chaotic than I suspected.”
Furthermore, without precedent for a drawn-out period of time, Maya understood that perhaps, quite possibly, this unforeseen gathering could be the beginning of a genuinely new thing.
