Free Online Stories For 3rd GradersThe Mysterious Discovery
Max was not your typical youngster; he had a vivid imagination, a passion for treasure maps, and an aptitude for adventure. One sunny afternoon, while digging behind his house in the garden, he stumbled upon something strange. His shovel struck something solid, and with a few more scoops of dirt, he uncovered a small glowing stone.
It was round and smooth, and in the light it shone like a star. It was unlike anything else Max had ever seen. The stone began to glow brighter and pulsate with energy as he held it in his palm. Then, out of nowhere, he was surrounded by a whirlwind of light. Under his feet, the ground vanished completely.
“WHOA!” As he rocketed into the sky and flew past clouds, stars, and satellites, Max yelled.
Max landed and found himself standing on gray, supple dust. He was surrounded by massive craters, and the night sky above was filled with stars. He had reached the moon!

“Hello, Earthling!” With a sly grin, the creature said. “I am Zork! You found the moonstone, huh?”
Max gave a disbelieving blink. “Wait, do you speak? And I’m actually on the moon!” .
Zork guffawed. “Yes, you are! And the stone you discovered? It only makes up half of a pair. For the moon to remain magical and glowing, it needs both stones. However, the other has failed. The moon’s light will vanish forever if we don’t find it soon.
Max felt uneasy. What are we waiting for, then?
In search of the second moonstone, Zork grabbed his hand and they took off, soaring across craters and hopping through valleys.

They encountered difficult riddles, floating puzzles, and even a horde of irritable moon moles guarding one of the clues. They overcame every obstacle thanks to Max’s quick wit and Zork’s clever jokes.
“Nearly there!” “Zork,” he said, pointing to the horizon. The distance was illuminated by a gentle blue glow. The twin moonstone had to be it.

When they got to the glowing cave, they saw a huge, glistening dragon wrapped in a stone that was exactly like Max’s. Its eyes shone gold and its scales sparkled like diamonds.
The dragon roared, “You must answer my question:” in order to take the stone. What is the brightest when shared, and what grows in size as you give more of it?”
Max deliberated. Zork appeared anxious.
“Is it… a grin?” Max had an idea.
The dragon laughed and roared. “That’s right, little Earthling.”
The stone joined its twin in a flash of light as it floated toward Max. Even more magical light began to emanate from the moon.

Zork smiled. “Max, you did it! The moon is protected.
The stones began to pulse once more before Max could respond. He was lifted from the surface by a silver beam, and the moonstone in his hand, he was back in his backyard in a flash.
